Modesto & Empire Traction Company (M&ET) is a short-line railroad situated in a 2000-acre industrial park known as the Beard Industrial District (www.BeardLand.com) in Modesto, California. While our main line may be only 5 miles long, we operate and maintain an additional 28 miles of track within the Beard Industrial District serving numerous customers.
We are growing and we are changing with the new decade. Five additional Railpower GenSets have recently joined our fleet. With a total of eight GenSets in operation on the M&ET we are now one of the most environmentally friendly railroads in the country. These seven GenSets allow us to more efficiently serve our customer/shipper base whose products include wine, canned goods, paper products, corn syrup, cooking oil, feed & grain, lumber, and packaging materials to name a few.
M&ET has connections with two Class I railroads, BNSF Railway and Union Pacific (UP). Our connection with the BNSF at Modesto-Empire Jct., California, is at our eastern-most location, while our connection with UP takes place within a few blocks of downtown Modesto. Our reach is to all of the rail network in North America and Mexico through our connections with BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad. Additionally, M&ET has available a 70 acre rail/truck transload facility encompassing 6,000 feet of unloading/loading tracks. These tracks are surrounded by 52' to 78' concrete aprons. The facility offers full security lighting and fencing, as well as a single location access with checkpoint office. Also, a 70' public truck scale and fuel dock are on the property.
We remain family owned and have been since M&ET began operating in 1911. While initially intending to operate as a passenger service, for over 80 years now, M&ET has succeeded in satisfying local industry's rail freight and transload needs. It is our intent to continue doing so ... as Modern and Efficient Transportation ... thanks to our terrific customer base.
